Abstract:
The translation was one of the ways of transferring European developments to Iran from the Naseri era onwards. The establishment of Dar al-Funun and the need to translate French sciences for teaching increased the need for translators. Women had no place in translation at this time. The gradual presence of women in social activities, and academics, and as a result, familiarity with other languages paved the way for them to enter the translation of texts. Of course, the role of intellectual men such as Akhundzadeh and Malkam Khan should not be neglected in this field either, because they raised the issue of women's education for the first time. The constitutional revolution also contributed to this by changing the position of women and changing the attitude of women regarding their demands, and more women found the opportunity to participate in this field. In this regard, this research intends to investigate female translators who were familiar with foreign languages during Naseri and Reza Shah Pahlavi periods, and in this way, a descriptive-analytical method was used. The findings indicate that despite the limitations and political, social, and family issues, women played a role in the history of Iranian translation, and the closer we get to the Pahlavi period, the more women we find in this field. The existence of intellectuals, both men and women, education, the establishment of women's magazines, and women's movements in other countries such as France are among the issues that encouraged women in the translation of articles and books. Although still few women had entered this field, of course, the low presence of women was not due to their lack of ability, but issues such as fear of rejection and ridicule caused women's self-censorship. During this period, great women such as Afaq-al-Doulah, Taj-ul-Sultaneh, and Fakhr-Afaq Parsai translated works and were familiar with other languages such as Turkish, French, English, etc.
