According to the research of theorists such as Akerlof (1970), Diamond (1984), and Stiglitz (1985; 1992), some of the characteristics of institutions related to the operations of classic universal banks, such as their approximately large size, equity ownership in customers, and especially their presence in the decision-making body of non-bank enterprises, can be considered as tools to reduce information asymmetry and improve the efficiency of financial intermediation (Tilly, 1998).
